All Hallows Read, Part Two

October 18, 2011    Tags: ,

It’s time to try something I haven’t tried before: A giveaway.

Yes, in the spirit of All Hallows Read (www.allhallowsread.com), I am offering two gift packages full of Halloween-y literature.

The first package will include a signed hardcover copy of The Books of Elsewhere, Volume One: The Shadows, a signed ARC (Advance Reading Copy: a paperback version of a book that is issued before the book’s official release, so that reviewers, booksellers, and other literary people can get an early look) of The Books of Elsewhere, Volume Two: Spellbound, and a brand-new softcover copy of one of my childhood favorites: Bunnicula, by James Howe.

The second package will include a signed hardcover copy of The Books of Elsewhere, Volume Two: Spellbound, and a fresh-from-the-bookshop paperback of Avi’s The Seer of Shadows, a ghost story rich with art and atmosphere.

What do you have to do to win?  Just leave a comment on this blog–at WordPress, at LiveJournal, or via Goodreads–with the title of your own favorite frightening read (and, of course, your name) by Tuesday, October 25th, one week from today.  I’ll pick winners at random, post the names/contact the recipients, and put the books in the mail as soon as the winners email me with postal addresses.  Ideally they will arrive in time for Halloween, when you can give them to other readers you love, or keep them for yourself.

And speaking of The Shadows, here’s a lovely new review: http://jeanlittlelibrary.blogspot.com/2011/10/read-scary-books-of-elsewhere-shadows.html.

And, AND, speaking of Halloween and books and other fun things, if you are within driving distance of River Falls, Wisconsin, don’t forget to stop by Karma Gifts from 1:00 – 3:00 on Saturday, October 29th for the Books of Elsewhere signing, reading, an art contest, and autumn treats!

  1. I am SO excited for Volume Two!

Favorite frightening read? Stephen King’s Night Shift. Something I probably shouldn’t have read at twelve, I suppose.

  2. I have way too many favorite books to list just one but Avi books are always great! And of course Spellbound!!

  3. My all time favorite frightening book is The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, and that ties with The Stand, by S. King also.

  4. I don’t usually like scary books, but I do remember Miss Clafooty and the Demon, with creepy Edward Gorey illustrations, from my own childhood reading. And would love a signed hardcover copy of Spellbound, to go with my hardcover of The Shadows! Thanks for the giveaway!

  5. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I love that she was only 18 when she wrote it on a summer vacation dare from Lord Byron.

  6. Hi, Jacqueline! Remember me? 🙂 My favorite frightening story is actually a short story read to me in fourth grade, by one of my favorite teachers that sadly no longer teaches at my school. I remember he made us apple cider on a mini stove, with spices and everything, pretending each element he added was something spooky and creepy (for example; these raisins are the eyeballs of fifty pickled rats). This story is called Tailypo, and you can read it here: http://www.scaryforkids.com/tailypo/

But of course I also love Spellbound; I was deliciously scared, but not liable to get nightmares. Still my top favorite book. 🙂

    Happy Halloween!

  9. My favourite scary book series is the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. A truly vivid story about the very dark side of magic, which had me eagerly reading right through the night. And just when you think it is all resolved, the last five pages of the third book is a complete surprise – a surprise that has stuck with me five years after completely the trilogy. A must read!

  12. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving is a classic for Halloween.

  13. Since I have an imagination similar to Olive’s, I don’t read scary books on purpose…but I do fondly remember the “Howliday Inn” from my childhood. After a scary book or movie, I’ve had to dash up too many stairs in the dark, convinced something unseen was in hot pursuit. I swore them all off….until I started browsing your first in the Shadows of elsewhere series. I can’t help myself now…I’ve fallen in love with Olive and have to keep reading!!!!!

  14. I remember reading The Amityville Horror when I was young. It was very scary. I saw the movie years later, but it didn’t compare to reading the book.

  15. The Books Of Elsewhere were so fun to read and they actually gave me the creeps. I would read them in the dark with the flashlight and i would imagine everything. I actually put everything that was happening to Olive in my own life.
